Appendix XII - MDAC AND MS JET
The BCFPI requires MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) and MS JET (Microsoft Jet - which gives access to .mdb files).
What versions do I need?
MDAC - We recommend MDAC 2.6 sp2 or newer since MDAC 2.6 sp2 fixes a number of important MDAC bugs. MDAC 2.6 is required to install MS Jet 4.0 sp3 (which we also recommend).
MS Jet - We recommend MS Jet 4.0 sp3.
How do I determine if I need the updates?
If you require the update, you will get an error saying "Interface not supported" when you run an export or aggregate database merge. If you do not have this software installed at all, the plug in reports, the export, and the aggregate database merge will not work at all.
Microsoft also has a version checker for MDAC here that you can use to determine which version you have installed.
For MS Jet, you'll need to search your computer for files called "msjet40.dll". If you don't have this file, you don't have MS Jet installed. If you do find the file, right click on the file, and choose 'Properties' from the pop-up menu. Go to the 'Version' tab. The "File Version" will tell you what version you have. The version should be 4.00.4431.1. If it is not, you should update your MS Jet. However, if the BCFPI works fine for you, you may decide not to update MS Jet.
Notes about installing the updates
You MUST have MDAC 2.6 installed before you install MS Jet 4 sp3. If you need to run the installs, you should reboot your computer after each install has finished, even if you are not prompted to do so. Give the installs some time to run, as their feedback isn't the greatest.
If you also need to update your Windows NT computer to sp6a, then you should do your MDAC and MS Jet updates AFTER your Windows NT sp6a update.
Where do I get the updates?
Both the MDAC and MS Jet updates are available free from Microsoft. You can get the MDAC 2.6 sp2 update here. The MS Jet 4.0 sp3 update is available here.
If you have problems getting these updates via the internet, you can contact support@bcfpi.com and have us send you these updates on a CD.
Where can I get more information?
Microsoft has information about MDAC and MS Jet at http://www.microsoft.com/data.
A complete list of all Microsoft MDAC and MS Jet downloads is available here.
